Today in Masonic History Niels Juul is born in 1859.
Niels Juul was a Danish born American politician.
Juul was born on April 27th, 1859 in Randers, Midtjylland, Denmark. He attended the Real School in Randers before he emigrated to the United States in 1880.
Once in the United States Juul settled in the Chicago, Illinois area. He entered the publishing business. He also studied law, graduating from the law department of Lake Forest University in 1898. The following year he was admitted to the bar and began a private practice in Chicago.
Juul was an alternate delegate to Republican National Convention from Illinois in 1892. In 1898 he was elected to the Illinois State Senate where he served until 1914. During the same time he served as the assistant attorney of the Sanitary District of Chicago from 1907 to 1911.
In 1916, Juul was elected to the United States House of Representatives for the 7th Congressional district of Illinois. He served in the House until 1921, failing to gain the nomination in the 1920 election.
On January 1st , 1921, President Warren G. Harding appointed Juul as the United States Collector of Customs for the Port of Chicago. He resigned almost two years to the day later December 31st, 1922.
After retiring Juul returned to his private practice until he passed away on December 4th, 1929.
Juul was a member of Ben Hur Lodge No. 818, Chicago, Illinois.
