Today in Masonic History Josiah Hayden Drummond passes away in 1902.
Josiah Hayden Drummond was an American lawyer.
Drummond was born in Winslow, Maine on August 20th, 1827. He attended Vassalboro Academy. He graduated from Colby College in 1846.
In 1856 Drummond was elected as to the Maine House of Representatives. He served in 1857 and 1858. In 1858 he was Speaker of the House. In 1859 he was Maine State Senator. He resigned to take the position of Maine's Attorney General. He held the post until 1863. He returned to the Maine House of Representatives in 1868 and served again as Speaker of the House.
In 1881 Drummond started a law firm with his son called Drummond & Drummond. The firm is still in operation today in Portland, Maine. He also served on the Board of Trustees for Colby College from 1890 until 1892.
Drummond passed away on October 25th, 1902.
Drummond was raised in Waterville Lodge No. 33, Waterville, Maine. In 1860 he served as the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Maine. He also served as the Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Maine and Right Eminent Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery of Maine. He also served as the head of three Masonic organizations. He was General Grand High Priest of the General Grand Chapter, he was General Grand Master of the General Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters and he served as Sovereign Grand Commander of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite from 1867 to 1879.
Drummond also wrote a Masonic text book which was used in lodges for Masonic History and the history of Masonic Jurisprudence.
