Vasile Alecsandri Passes Away

Today in Masonic history Vasile Alecsandri passes away in 1890.

Alecsandri was a Romanian poet, playwright, politician and diplomat. He collected Romanian folk songs and was on of the principles in the movemnet for Romanian cultural identity also know as the Moldavian Revolution of 1848.

The Moldavian Revolution was a power struggle between Prince Sturdaz and the boyars, a ruling class just below the prince in the power structure of the time. The revolt was unsuccessful do to a lack of organization and a lack of support from the people. Some of the members of the revolt were simply seeking the crown for themseleves.
