Carroll L. Beedy is Born

Today in Masonic History Carroll L. Beedy is born in 1880.

Carroll L. Beedy was an American politician.

Beedy was born in Phillips, Franklin County, Maine. He attended public schools in Lewiston, Maine. He would graduate from Bates College in 1903. After graduating from Bates he would go on to graduate from the Law Department of Yale Univeristy in 1906.

Beedy was admitted to the Bar in 1907. He would begin practicing law in Portland, Maine. Later he would become the prosecuting attorney for Cumberland County, Maine. He would hold the position from 1917 to 1921.

In 1920, Beedy would run in the Republican primary for the open United States Senate seat. In the primary he would defeat the Mayor of Portland by just 19 votes. He would go on to win to the United States Senate seat in the 67th Congress. He would hold the seat for six consecutive terms from 1921 to 1935.

Beedy would sit on a variety of committees during his 14 years in the United States Senate. Some of those committees were the Committee on Elections No. 1, the Committee on Mileage and the Committee on Expenditures in the Department of Labor .

In 1934, Beedy would lose his bid for another term in the United States Senate. After leaving the Senate, Beedy would begin practicing law in Washington, D.C.

Beedy would pass away in Washington, D.C. on August 30th, 1947. He would be interred in Portland Maine.

Beedy was an active Freemason according to sevearl accounts. At this time his actual lodge affilaition is not known.
