Today in Masonic History John Stuchell Fisher is born in 1867.
John Stuchell Fisher is an American politician.
Fisher was born on May 25th, 1867 in South Mahoning Township, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the Indiana State Normal School, which later became Indiana University of Pennsylvania. After graduating he began a career as a teacher and served as principal of schools in Plumville and Indiana, Pennsylvania.
In 1893, Fisher finished his law degree and was shortly after admitted to the Pennsylvania State bar. After being admitted to the bar he setup a private practice in Indiana, Pennsylvania.
In 1900, Fisher was elected to his first public office when he was elected to the Pennsylvania State Senate. He served two consecutive four year terms. In 1908 he chose not to run for re-election. After leaving the Senate he would go on to serve on the state's Commission on Constitutional Revision and as a member of Governor William Cameron Sproul cabinet. Specifically he was State Commissioner of Banking.
In 1926, Fisher was elected as the 29th Governor of Pennsylvania. During his term, Fisher focused on fiscal policy, public works, conservation and voter fraud. He created so many public works projects that he was nicknamed "the Builder." His administration put nearly 500,000 acres aside for Pennsylvania state parks.
After leaving office, Fisher became a consultant for his son's law firm. He also served on the boards of several financial institutions in Pennsylvania.
Fisher passed away on June 25th, 1940.
Fisher was a made a mason on sight on March 7, 1928 at a special communication of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania. After he was made a mason by the Grand Master he chose to join Indiana Lodge No. 313 in Indiana, Pennsylvania.
